Summer Rain

Red wine in jam jars

Gust of rain surprises

Quick hustle for cover

Barbeque interrupted

Fat drops on slick railings

Porch boards creak, chairs squeak

Sultry has turned chilly

Sundress clings to wet skin

Sudden shivers

Sweaters are found

Children wrapped in towels

Conversations resumed

Hot seeping through paper plates on laps

Youngsters chase and squeal

Lazy drip drip from the eaves

Wet roses give up their scent

As do jasmine and sweet peas

Mingle their perfume with wood smoke

And damp grass

Contented, sated, barely moving

Gentle languor sustained

As sun sets, stars shine

And fireflies take over
