First Day of Spring

This morning I was privileged to be at the 10:00 a.m. Story Time at Charlie’s Corner in San Francisco. It is a cozy children-only store with books tailored just for little ones (and their parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles, of course). Their interior is delightful with a huge hollow tree in the corner with a round opening graced with a velvet red curtains for puppet shows.

Elise Filka used her frog puppet to interview me and Jeff played his guitar as we sang a welcoming song, a song about a spider and a song about the sun. I read my book “Spring”  and we looked for pink petals and quacked like ducks and picked out swans and fawns and other lovely spring-time things.

After that, I introduced my next book “Armadillos Amble” where we acted out the ABC story of twenty-six animals doing things with the same letter as their names. We ambled and hopped and slithered and ungulated (and learned new words) and then sang the “ABC” song. The half-hour story time ended with a goodbye song and a cloud of bubbles.

One mother said it was the ‘best story time she’s ever attended’.

Eclipse

What weather we’ve been experiencing these past few weeks! A complete solar eclipse in Oregon. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, Maria with 100+ mph winds cutting destructive paths through Texas, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Dominica, Cuba, Florida and other islands and states. Hazy skies and spectacular sunsets due to dozens of forest fires. Two major earthquakes in Mexico flattening major buildings and killing hundreds. Record-breaking heat wave with a near or over 100º temperatures in one of the most temperate regions of the Northwest. Lightning, thunder and tropical rain in air that felt like hot breath here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

While mostly dangerous and scary, some of the weather was fun. I joined my sister, nieces, great-nieces and nephew to experience the solar eclipse near Olympia Washington. While it wasn’t a complete eclipse, it was near enough that we were able to feel the drop in temperature, experience the gradual sunlight dimming, hear the silence as birds went to their roosts, see shadows alter as they reflected the crescent shape of the eclipse, and feel the breeze as the moon moved across the sun in the late morning hours of Monday, August 21, 2017. We wore our commemorative solar glasses; did an eclipse art project involving two plates, hole punches, finger paint and a bit of yarn; ate our eggs sunnyside up with blueberry pancakes (big pancake on the bottom, fried egg in middle, yolk-sized pancake on top) for breakfast; and enjoyed banana slices topped with half purple grapes, Starburst and Milky Way candies as our eclipse-watching snacks.

Where were you and what did you experience this last solar eclipse?

Children's picture book

Red

The other day I taught a poetry class at the Young Writer’s Club at the Portola Valley Library. I asked the students to pick a color and describe it with all of their senses. These were children ranging from first grade to fifth grade and they came up with amazing poems. One did an acrostic, another described blue in terms of a velvety dress, another described the taste of green as ‘rainwater’, another picked smooth stones and water as her metaphors. Just delicious! Here’s what I came up with for the color “red”…

Red

Luscious lips lick candy apple

Crunchy, crispy, lip-smacking

Cinnamon, gumdrops, tomato juice

Smooth, silky, sticky, hot

Strawberries in sunshine

Chili peppers in salsa
